Truth
or Consequences, City of Health
Truth
or Consequences is well known for its geothermal hot mineral
water which underlies the entire downtown district. The water
has long been known for its remarkable healing powers. Since
the days of pre-history, people journeyed here to bathe in
the water to soothe and heal their aching bodies.
In
those days, the hot mineral water bubbled to the surface along
the marshlands of the Rio Grande. Now, there are 9 bathhouses
in downtown Truth or Consequences which offer hot mineral
water baths. Their styles range from funky to elegant. Some
feature tiled tubs and others have gravel-bottomed pools through
which the mineral water freely flows. Most are indoors and
some are outdoors. To enhance your healing experience, most
of these bathhouses offer services like massage, reflexology,
aromatherapy, hot rock treatments and more.
In the1930s and 1940s, Hot Springs, as Truth or Consequences
was known then, was filled with health clinics, bathhouses,
health stores, small motels and apartments. Travelers journeyed
from around the country and world to cure themselves of a
wide range of afflictions. The Carrie Tingley Hospital for
Crippled Children was built here in the 1930s, a project of
the New Deal era. Now this hospital is home to the New Mexico
Veterans Hospital.
The geothermal hot mineral water comes to the earth's surface
at 104 - 110 degrees Fahrenheit. There is no unpleasant odor
or taste. Containing approximately 32 minerals, it has a Ph
of 7.0.
There
is a growing community of alternative health practitioners
in Truth or Consequences. They work in close cooperation with
the downtown bathhouses to provide professional services to
all who seek healing treatments. Your host will be happy to
arrange an appointment for you.
Truth or Consequences continues its reputation as the City
of Health as plans move forward to build a new hospital.
